‘Curiosity is the beginning of adventure’ – The Hungry Monkey Team
Abhishek Patnaik along with three other partners started the Hungry Monkey in 2014, and since then it has become a favourite with the Delhi crowd. Sprawled over three floors that overlook the magnificent Deer Park, it is located in the Safdarjang Enclave market. Earlier this year, they won the Times Food & Nightlife Award.
I spoke with Abhishek about the inspiration behind the restaurant. He told me that they wanted to build on the concept of their successful bar called the Red Monkey, which was located in Defense Colony. With the Hungry Monkey, they decided to take things a step forward, by getting a larger space and focusing on serving food that would be healthy and different from the usual fare one gets in Delhi. Their food, ‘Californian Cuisine’, is essentially, fusion food with European influences. Chef Noah Barnes, uses fresh local produce in all his dishes. There is an array of vegetarian dishes as well on the menu. In fact, some of Abhishek’s favourites are the vegetarian dishes like the Cold Spinach Gomae and the Beetroot Tartare. Needless to say they constantly innovate and bring out new dishes.
They also have one of the best cocktail bars in town, where they serve contemporary cocktails as well as the much-loved classics. The design and décor, which all the partners contributed to, has influences of a typical New York loft with its brick walls and concrete floors. The most loved part of the restaurant, though, is the terrace overlooking the Deer Park.
