Bhansali’s Ram Leela

If it be a Bhansali film then a big budget extravaganza it will be. Ram – Leela is an explosion of sounds and a riot of colours from the opening gun-battle between the trigger happy Rajades and Saneriyas to the gorgeous song sequences. The sets are reminiscent of Baz Luhrman’s extravagance, coupled with the costumes by Anju  Modi, bring the vibrance of the Rann of Kutch. However once you get over Ravi Verman’s beautiful cinematography, the sleek editing and production design, you realise the script fails to match up to the visual brilliance. The character development is weak and the dialogues make it hard to conceive that this is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet. However, the cast keeps the narrative afloat. Ranvir and Deepika’s chemistry is intense, Richa Chaddha provides a strong support and Supriya Pathak simply steals the  show.If yo
